There are two kinds of help for this in Singapore: marriage coaching and marriage counselling. They sound alike. They are not. This guide tells you the difference, who each one is for, and how to pick. I am Dave Gor, a relationship coach in Singapore. I will also tell you plainly when you should not come to me.

What marriage coaching is

Coaching works on what you do next.

A relationship coach for couples looks at the pattern you are stuck in, names it, gives you one thing to do differently, and checks whether you did it. Sessions are structured. You leave each one with something to practise before the next.

Marriage coaching suits a marriage that is basically sound but stuck in a loop. The love is there. The habits are not working.

What marriage counselling is

Counselling works through what hurts.

A trained counsellor or psychologist helps you with pain: betrayal, grief, trauma, anxiety or depression inside the marriage. Sessions go slower and deeper into the past. The first job is to make it safe to say what has not been said.

Marriage counselling in Singapore is the right door when one of you is hurting in a way that runs the relationship, or when one of you is not sure they want to stay.

The difference, side by side

Marriage coaching Marriage counselling
Focus What you do next What hurts, and why
Who Relationship coach Trained counsellor or psychologist
Pace Structured. Something to practise each week Slower. Follows the emotion
Best for Repeated fights, drifting apart, preparing for marriage, a good marriage you want better Betrayal, abuse, trauma, grief, mental health, one partner wanting out
You leave the first session with A plan and one technique A safe place to keep talking

Choose coaching if

  • It is the same argument in different clothes. Money, chores, in-laws, tone. The fight has one shape.
  • You talk, you agree, and nothing changes.
  • You are drifting. No big fight, just less of everything.
  • You are getting married and want to start right.
  • Your marriage is good and you want it better.

Most couples who come for couples coaching are not in crisis. They are tired of the loop.

Choose counselling if

  • There has been an affair and it is still raw.
  • One of you has been hurt, now or in the past, in a way that still shapes how you react.
  • One of you has anxiety, depression, or another condition that is running daily life.
  • One of you is not sure they want to stay.
  • There is any kind of abuse. Then counselling, and safety first.

If you are in this list, see a counsellor first. The Ministry of Social and Family Development lists family service centres and support lines. You can come to coaching later, and many couples do.

How coaching works at Celestial Harmony

Most coaching starts with “tell me about yourselves”. Mine starts with your birth charts.

You both send your birth date, time and place. I read each chart, and how the two interact. Each of you gets your own written report before we meet. It names the fight you keep having, and why each of you plays your part in it.

So the coaching does not start from zero. We go straight to the pattern. I spend two to three hours with each of you alone, then we meet together. You leave with one technique for your most common argument and a practice for the week. It is all on the couples coaching page.

You do not need to believe in astrology. You need an accurate birth time and one session. Judge it by whether the report describes you.

How to choose a relationship coach in Singapore

Ask any coach these four questions before you pay.

  1. What happens in the first session? If the answer is “we talk”, you are paying to be listened to. That is counselling’s job, and counsellors do it better.
  2. What will we leave with? You should hear something concrete. A technique. A plan. A thing to do this week.
  3. What training do you have?Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling (2017), with five years of experience in astrology and relationship coaching for couples.
  4. When would you send us to a counsellor instead? A good coach has a clear answer. If they say “never”, walk away.

In short

Coaching changes what you do. Counselling heals what hurts. If the marriage is sound and stuck, start with marriage coaching. If someone is hurting, start with counselling. Either way, start. The loop does not break on its own.

Not sure which you need? Take the two-minute check, or message me. I will tell you honestly, even if the answer is “not me”.

Frequently asked questions

Is marriage coaching the same as therapy?

No. Therapy and counselling treat emotional pain and mental health, often by working through the past. Coaching works on what you do from here, with practice between sessions.

Can a marriage coach diagnose depression or anxiety?

No. A coach cannot diagnose or treat a condition. If I see signs of one, I will say so and point you to a counsellor or doctor.

How much does relationship coaching cost in Singapore?

It depends on the coach and the package. Mine: $300 for one and a half hour. Every price is on the Reports page before you pay. Ask any coach for the full price before you start. One who will not give it is a warning sign.

Can we move from counselling to coaching?

Yes. Many couples do counselling first, when something hurts, and coaching after, when they are ready to build. The order matters. Do not skip the first if you need it.

My partner will not come. Can I come alone?

Yes. I can read your chart and your side of the pattern. You can change half of a loop on your own, and that often changes the whole thing. Partners usually join once they see the difference.
